Provably Fair Gambling: How Seed Verification Works and What It Cannot Prove

Understand the commitment, seed-reveal and outcome-recomputation process, while separating verifiable game results from solvency, licensing and withdrawal safety.

Provably Fair Gambling: How Seed Verification Works and What It Cannot Prove

“Provably fair” is a claim about something that can be checked, not a certificate for an entire casino. A useful verification process lets a player reconstruct a particular recorded outcome from disclosed inputs and published rules. It does not establish that the operator holds enough money to pay, treats complaints fairly or is licensed to serve the player.

Stake's implementation documentation supplies a concrete example. The explanation here concerns that documented mechanism; other services can use different constructions.

First establish what the operator commits to

Before play, the operator provides a hash associated with a secret server seed. The later verification question is whether the revealed seed matches the earlier commitment. Save the original value before the results are known. A hash supplied only afterwards does not independently show what was committed beforehand.

Hashing is not encryption with a decryption key. The practical security requirement is that reversing the commitment or substituting a different matching seed should not be feasible. Do not confuse the commitment check with the separate algorithm used to generate outcome bytes: Stake documents HMAC_SHA256 for its outcome-generation function, with the server seed used as its key.

Identify every input, not just the seed

The documented outcome function uses a server seed, client seed, nonce and cursor. The nonce advances with bets. The cursor helps address further bytes when an outcome needs more data. These are different roles; changing a cursor is not the same action as placing another bet.

Record the exact inputs and game identifier. A verifier that silently assumes a starting nonce or ignores an additional parameter can produce a different answer even when the seed is correct. A reproducible result requires the same input encoding and the same algorithm, not merely two strings labelled “seed”.

Reproduce the mapping into the game result

Random bytes are an intermediate product. A game must convert them into something such as cards, positions or a numerical result. Verification therefore needs both stages: generating the bytes and applying the game's published conversion rules.

An expression that simply feeds three inputs into a hash is not necessarily the operator's complete implementation. Stake's documented function also encodes a current round in the message and uses a cursor to select bytes. Use the exact published implementation for the relevant game, rather than a convenient approximation.

A practical verification record

Before a session, preserve the commitment and the client-seed settings. During play, retain bet identifiers, the relevant nonce, stakes and the displayed results. After the operator's seed-rotation process reveals the previous server seed, check the commitment using the specified method.

Then reconstruct the outcome bytes and their mapping for selected recorded bets. Compare the reconstructed result with the original result, not with a screenshot obtained after the fact. Keep the verifier version and any discrepancy. Never enter a wallet recovery phrase into a fairness checker: a game seed and a wallet secret are unrelated credentials.

Matching results are useful but limited evidence

A matching result shows that the recorded data are consistent with the checked algorithm. It does not, by itself, demonstrate that every bet was recorded, that every implementation path behaved the same way or that the payout schedule offers an attractive expected return.

An algorithm can be reproducible and still describe a game with a house edge. Likewise, a operator can publish technical documentation without proving its reserves. The appropriate conclusion is narrow: the particular outcome passed the checks you actually performed.

On-chain operation adds different questions

Public smart-contract code can make some actions inspectable, but it does not remove every control point. Ethereum's security documentation discusses risks associated with administrative ownership and contract design. Ask who can upgrade, pause or otherwise control the relevant contract.

A seed-verification tool cannot answer those governance questions. Nor can an administrative audit establish that a separate seed commitment was recorded before a bet. Keep these investigations distinct so that a positive result in one area does not become an unsupported assurance in another.

The defensible conclusion

Look for an exact commitment, complete recorded inputs, a published outcome conversion and a reproducible comparison. Treat missing documentation as an unresolved limitation. Finally, evaluate licensing, custody and withdrawal arrangements separately. A transparency mechanism is valuable when its claim is precise; it becomes misleading when “provably fair” is used to mean that nothing else can go wrong.
