Centralized Crypto Casinos vs On-Chain Betting: Who Controls the Funds?
A control-based comparison of operator accounts and smart-contract arrangements, including custody, permissions, upgrades and the limits of visible balances.

“On-chain” describes where some actions are recorded or executed. It does not automatically mean that a betting service has no administrator, cannot change its rules or always pays successfully. A useful comparison asks who controls the funds at each stage and what conditions govern their release.
Rather than assigning every service to a perfectly pure category, inspect the particular arrangement. A product can combine an operator account, wallet transfers and smart-contract components. Its marketing label is not a substitute for identifying those parts.
What an operator account represents
In a custodial model, the player transfers funds to an organisation-controlled address and receives an account balance. The player's original wallet keys do not control the organisation's receiving address. Withdrawals depend on the account agreement and the operator's payment process.
Ask which entity holds the balance, what withdrawal checks apply and what documentation describes fund protection. A visible deposit transaction establishes a transfer, not the recipient's complete liabilities or ability to pay every customer.
What a contract arrangement changes
A smart contract can encode conditions for accepting a wager and releasing a payment. Inspect the actual code and deployed address before concluding what those conditions are. A readable contract is useful evidence only if it is the contract involved in the transaction.
Ask whether the arrangement includes an upgrade mechanism, pause function or administrative permission. Ethereum's contract-security documentation discusses risks associated with administrative ownership and design. An on-chain record does not remove such controls.
Outcome inputs require their own investigation
Determine how the contract obtains the information needed to resolve a bet. Is it calculated internally, supplied through another component or provided by a designated party? Identify what happens if that input is unavailable or contested.
Do not infer independence from the word “oracle”, or fairness from the mere existence of source code. You need the actual input mechanism, conversion rules and control structure. If these details cannot be established, mark the outcome process unresolved rather than describing it as trustless.

MetaMask explains that connecting a wallet does not, by itself, authorise movement of its tokens. Additional approvals or signed actions can grant powers beyond making the address visible.
Before approving, establish the spender, permitted asset and scope. Disconnecting an interface should not be assumed to undo every previously granted permission. Check the relevant wallet guidance and review the actual approval rather than treating one button as a complete security control.
Include fees and the game's expected cost
An application can involve several paid actions. Find out which transactions are necessary, who pays their network cost and whether funds must cross a bridge. Ethereum's bridge documentation explains that bridges introduce additional technical and trust risks.
For a hypothetical comparison, two transaction charges of 0.001 ETH total 0.002 ETH. If the wager is 0.05 ETH, those charges alone equal 4% of the wager. They do not replace any house edge in the game. Compare total costs on both routes instead of comparing one route's gas bill with only another route's game margin.
A visible balance is not a complete solvency test
A contract balance can answer how much a particular address holds at the observation time. It does not necessarily answer how much the system owes, which funds are already committed or which addresses have further control.
Ask how maximum payouts are financed and what happens if a payment cannot execute. For a custodial service, request equivalent documentation about obligations and withdrawals. Do not treat either a displayed account total or an explorer balance as sufficient evidence of all liabilities being covered.
Fairness checks do not resolve custody questions
Some services supply reproducible game-outcome mechanisms. Stake's documented implementation is one example of a seed-based verification approach. Its technical documentation does not establish an operator's legal status or reserves.
The same separation applies to contracts. A correctly calculated result and an accessible payment are different requirements. Evaluate the outcome mechanism, fund control and dispute route individually, then assess the complete service using only the evidence you have actually obtained.
A concise evaluation record
Record the entity or deployed address receiving funds, permissions needed from your wallet, upgrade and pause controls, outcome inputs, fee-bearing actions and release conditions. Save the relevant rule or code version. Where a claim lacks evidence, say so. The strongest comparison is a map of actual control, not a choice between two marketing labels.
